Why is research into chronic ankle instability necessary?

Chronic ankle instability has a huge prevalence and socio-economic impact on society. The research group has already published several articles on the rehabilitation of ankle sprains. This shows that further scientific research is needed to further optimise rehabilitation. For example, improving the active positional sense of the ankle joint sufficiently appears to be a challenge in this patient population (Xue et al., 2023).

This study aims to improve the rehabilitation pathway for these patients.

Recruitment
Researchers at the University of Antwerp are looking for athletes (18+) with acute ankle sprain (<14 days) for an international study (collaboration with Switzerland and Northern Ireland), where the previous sprain was at least 12 months ago.

Protocol
Participants will be physically tested three times: <15 days, 6 weeks and 12 weeks after the sprain. Additional follow-up will be conducted by telephone until 12 months after the sprain. All participants will receive a fully developed screening and progress report after the third physical session.
