Pregnancy and physiotherapy?
Pregnancy represents a profound journey, but it can also take a toll on the body as it adapts to feed a growing baby. During pregnancy, the body undergoes rapid changes influenced by hormone fluctuations, postural changes and changing balance. As the baby grows, the pressure on the abdomen increases and firm pelvic floor muscles are needed to bear the extra weight and prevent urinary problems. These changes often manifest themselves in various musculoskeletal complaints.
Prenatal physiotherapy for common complaints during pregnancy
- Pelvic girdle/ Hip/ Groin/ Pain in the pubic region
- Lower back/ Sacro iliac joint discomfort/ Sciatica
- Thoracic/ Rib discomfort
- Pelvic floor weakness and urinary tract problems
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
very pregnancy is different and therefore a personalised approach is needed. Treatment may include strengthening pelvic floor muscles, mobilising joints, massages and muscle relaxation exercises. We also provide flexibility and strength exercises and adapted education so that you can regain control of your body yourself.
Postnatal physiotherapy to treat post-pregnancy symptoms
After vaginal delivery or caesarean section, there is often weakening of the pelvic floor muscles. These muscles play an important role in continence, pelvic stability and sexual function and are thus affected during pregnancy and childbirth. It is crucial to start pelvic floor exercises early to avoid long-term problems. After delivery, holding the baby and frequent lifting can lead to various discomforts, such as:
- Stress and urge incontinence
- Pelvic and lower back complaints
- Upper back and neck pain
- Diastasis Recti (separation of the abdomen)
Treatment may include:
- tailor-made programmes for the pelvic floor and surrounding muscles
- management of musculoskeletal problems
- management of scar tissue and
- guidance on resuming sports, nutrition, sleep, posture and ergonomics.
